Compressed Gas Storage and Use Risk Assessment

This fully completed compressed gas storage and use risk assessment example has been prepared by a qualified health and safety professional. It covers a typical range of hazards, risks and associated control measures for the storage, handling, transportation and use of compressed gas cylinders and can be used as a starting point when developing your own risk assessment documentation.

What Does This Compressed Gas Risk Assessment Cover?

This risk assessment identifies the key hazards associated with compressed gas storage and use including;
  • Cylinder explosion and fire — failure or rupture of a compressed gas cylinder from overpressure, heat or damage causing explosive release, blast and fragmentation injuries
  • Gas leak and asphyxiation — leaking compressed gas displacing oxygen in confined spaces or accumulating to explosive concentrations
  • Manual handling of cylinders — moving heavy compressed gas cylinders causing musculoskeletal injury and foot crush injuries
  • Inadequate training and incorrect use — use of equipment by untrained operatives leading to incorrect connections and regulator failures
  • Empty cylinder management — improper handling or storage of empty cylinders creating trip hazards and confusion with full cylinders

Each hazard includes an inherent risk rating ranging from Tolerable to Substantial, and a comprehensive listing of applicable control measures covering areas such as;

  • Cylinders stored upright, secured and away from heat sources, direct sunlight and ignition sources
  • Oxygen and fuel gas cylinders separated by 3 metres or a 30-minute fire-resistant partition
  • Portable gas detectors in potentially oxygen-deficient spaces and leak detection checks before use
  • Cylinder trolleys for all movements; safety footwear with crush-resistant toe caps
  • Only trained and competent operatives permitted to connect, use and disconnect compressed gas equipment
  • Empty cylinders clearly marked, stored separately and returned to supplier promptly

A residual risk rating is then assigned to each hazard, demonstrating how effective risk management reduces overall risk to a tolerable level.

A Professional, Easy-to-Use Risk Assessment Template

This document uses colour-coded header styles matched to risk ratings, making it quick to read and easy to communicate during toolbox talks and worker training. A built-in risk rating matrix supports consistent evaluation of likelihood and consequence, and hazard pictograms using internationally recognised ISO warning symbols are included alongside relevant hazard entries.
The result is a completed risk assessment that looks professional, reads clearly, and demonstrates a structured and effective approach to risk management.

Who Is This Risk Assessment Template Suitable For?

This compressed gas risk assessment template is suitable for health and safety advisers, maintenance managers, production supervisors and any employer with a duty to assess risks associated with the storage and use of compressed gas cylinders. It can be implemented as a standalone document or as part of a broader occupational health and safety management system aligned with ISO 45001.

Note: This example risk assessment is supplied for use as guidance only and should be reviewed and completed by a competent person.
